The Summer Training in Academic Research and Scholarship (STARS) Program is a distinguished summer research opportunity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) for underrepresented in medicine (URM)* undergraduate rising juniors and seniors, and first-year medical students with a strong interest in pursuing advanced careers as research scientists, physicians and/or health care professionals. The program recruits students from around the US into an eight-week mentored summer program. The students participate in intensive hands-on training in research methods and practice directly in the labs of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School’s leading researchers.

  • To provide underrepresented in medicine (URM) medical and undergraduate students an opportunity to engage in basic, clinical & translational research projects during the summer at Brigham & Women’s Hospital (BWH) and Harvard Medical School (HMS) under the mentorship of experienced researchers. 
  • To enhance the research capabilities of URM medical and undergraduate students. 
  • To encourage these scholars to pursue advanced medical and graduate education and training. 

Features 

  • Eight week research experience: students submit an abstract of their summer research and share their research findings during a final research presentation day
  • Clinical shadowing experiences with BWH faculty
  • Weekly Circle Up discussion groups 
  • Professional Development Workshops on topics such as Professionalism, Presentation Interviewing and Medical School Admissions
  • Reflections Career Series with faculty and administrators in the health care field
  • Social Networking Events such as dinners with program staff and faculty
Support

  • Students are assigned a faculty mentor who will work closely with the student to ensure completion of a project over the eight-week summer period
  • Transportation to and from Boston
  • Housing for eight-week period
  • Living stipend for food and other expenses 
  • Select program meals
  • Access to cultural, educational & career development activities

  • Decisions Announced: Friday, February 15, 2019
  • Program Dates for Undergraduates: Monday, June 10, 2019 – Friday, August 2, 2019
  • Program Dates for First Year Medical Students: Monday, June 10, 2019 – Friday, August 2, 2019

Eligibility

The BWH STARS Program seeks motivated students who are interested in pursuing a career in academic medicine and meet the following criteria: 

  • Member of an underrepresented in medicine (URM) group (African-American, Black, Latina/Latino, Alaskan/Hawaiian Native or Native American) 
  • US citizen or non-citizen national with a permanent residence visa
  • Undergraduate rising junior or senior, or first-year medical student
  • Can provide proof of health insurance coverage

How to Apply: Prepare & Submit Online Application 

  • Write your Personal Statement – Please describe in at least 400 words your educational and professional goals, and how your participation in the BWH STARS Program will assist in meeting your goals. Be sure to articulate your qualifications and reasons for wishing to participate in the program. Please upload your personal statement to the application as a word document or PDF file. Be sure to include your last name as a header on all pages. 
  • Choose a Photo (2in x 2in) – jpg less than 1MB 
  • Choose 2 Letters of Recommendation Writers and collect their contact information
  • First Year Medical Students Only: 1 Letter of Good Standing 
  • Complete online application and upload your personal statement and photo
  • Confirm Receipt of Confirmation Email from bwhstars@partners.org

Request your Required Supporting Materials and confirm they are to be received by our office by January 14, 2019

  • 1 Official Transcript from your current and/or undergraduate institution (If you have been at your current institution less than one year, please submit a transcript from your prior institution) 
  • 2 Letters of Recommendation (you must make these requests) 
  • 1 Letter of Good Standing (First-year medical students only)
